Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2013-08-20
Local force of nature: tripped out Krautrock psyche influenced sex beats that channel the best of Can, contemporaries Wooden Shjips, all things dreamy and trippy. Six, seven-piece band relies heavily on rhythm (live performances often include dancing girls on stage) distinguishing them from other straight up noise/retro bands of recent popularity. Congas, drummers, tambourine. Then great bass, synth and to top it off one of the most tasteful guitarists out there: twangy, fuzzy, textured. This young guy really channels some higher force. Despite subdued vocals this band takes on an instrumental feel. A dance band in the sense that Wooden Shjips, The League of Gentlemen, Tussle are. They are all about the finer things in life. Makin’ babies…

1) (5:54) pure Can ecstasy: congas, tambourine team up for sexy beat, fuzzy guitar with mystical feeling slow phrased vocs, trademark stuff
2) (5:01) tom tom heavy beat that shifts after 2 minutes into a driving head nodder hip shaker
3) (5:36) starts minimal, guitar and some synth noise, simple beat, not as straightforward a dance beat, weird, with noise fest, noise guitar leads
4) (3:31) “funny” sounding simple melody and tones, good beat evolves slightly, still dancing, genuine instrumental
5) (7:24) mellow overall: starts off chill, mindful, slow synth swirls add to the great beats, psyche wah guitar, takes a killer break about 3/5’s the way through then picks up again in a whole new awesome groove that falls away slowly, quietly
6) (6:02) female spoken word in French for first two minutes, then the beat shifts and becomes their great trademark sexy stuff, with soaring synth and super cool bass playing
