Based out of Chicago, Verma is an experimental group that seeks to combine psychedelic rock with ambient sound. This is their sixth release. The same sort of vibe is kept all throughout this cd, which is a sort of relaxing dronish feel. The relaxing aspect seems consistent throughout this cd. Certainly not my style of music, but I could see why people would appreciate this for easy listening. At times I feel this CD gets a little repetitive. A lot of the songs start out with funky guitar or drums but then grow to be a little repetitive. The usage of random background and distortion make this feel epic, but also laid back. Great bass guitar, I might add, but the vocals seem rather lacking. I would suggest songs 1,2, and 7. No FCC violations.
1. Regolith(3:59)- Starts out with a very atmospheric and drone feeling alongside an epic guitar riff. Quickly adds a catchy bassline to the song. Not a lot of vocals for this piece, and they are pretty repetitive. After picking up the song doesn’t seem to evolve after the first couple minutes.
2. Chrome(3:57)- Begins with some distortion but also with some catchy drums. However after this initial opening, the song gets a little repetitive with repeating (scarce) vocals. Despite its repetitiveness, it does seem like a rather catchy song.
3. Erato- (2:51)- Nothing but some weird, but aquatic sounds. Perhaps good to play as background music but would not recommend for active radio play.
4. The Traveller (4:28)- Much more vocal heavy than the other songs on this album. Another catchy guitar riff to start the song off but the guitars often sink to the wayside as the drumming, vocals and background music drive the sound.
5. Hologrammer- (6:13) Longer, slower song compared to the rest on the cd. Makes great use of background noise. Often has longer sections with wailing guitars. The bassline on this song, however, is not as impressive as on other songs on this CD and tends to feel a little dragged out.
6. Sacrifice- (4:22) I love the introduction to this song. Subtle guitars and drums with faded out vocals. The song remains quiet and mellow and rather simple. I would suggest using it as background music, but not for active listening.
7. Sunrunner (5:00)- Another slower song, but this one has a lot more variety with what it does with its guitars. Very soothing guitar riffs with a hit of screeching guitars in the background. Does a lot of variety with the background sound.
