SYNTH POP / FOLKTRONICA
New singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers is instantly famous, but her path getting there includes two self-released download albums made while in high school. Video of Pharrell Williams heaping praise upon Maggie at an NYU masters class went viral; a session on NPR’s “little desk” series and various radio station appearances quickly followed. Now here’s her first major label EP. There’s a nice blend of acoustic and chill electronic sounds, plus Maggie’s pleasing singing voice. Songs 2-5 are original compositions by Rogers.

1 Very slow ballad. Multi-track vocals accompanied by crickets. Traditional lyrics. (2:10)
2 ** Mid-tempo. The breakthrough hit: alternating alto & falsetto lead vocals; overdubbed vocal harmony; gentle EDM beats. Post-breakup lyric: she’s slowly getting over it. (3:09)
3 Mid-tempo. A more powerful vocal; more standardly “pop”. Not bad. (3:42)
4 ** Mid-tempo love song. Strong vocal performance. Guitar, winds, drums. Nice. (4:38)
5 Slow sad intro; suddenly shifts gears to mid-tempo and happier. (3:35)
