Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2004-10-12
Slick glammy soulful garage swamp blues-rock with female vocs up front, like the Detroit Cobras gone LA/Mississippi. But wait, this is out on Estrus Records, the label that was “new garage” 10 years before the Strokes were even pooping in their diapers. This is good stuff, down south 70’s rock’isms, epic harmonized choruses, a woman with good pipes. I really hate to liken this to finer moments of Lynrd Skynrd, or the like, but they throw in the Hammond organ and slide-guitar embellishments and visions of Jim Dandy and Black Oak Arkansas dance in my head. But don’t be scared (though the mere mention of Ronnie and the gang surely warrants it), this band is soulful and lends hope to the future of Estrus Records. If the slick stuff scares you there are plenty of raw moments on this CD to make you happy.

1) glammy swamp, vocs ring of the 70’s, mid paced swamp rock with Lynrd Skynrd slide guitar embellishments (oops, didn’t mean to scare you)
2) here we go, upbeat gear-head rock with sexy vocs, still glammy and slick
3) soulful with a dash of funkiness, slick though
4) good raw guitar riff, epic glam soul blues
5) oh boy, 70’s rock a la Grand Funk, early UFO, Kiss, AC-DC, insert great guitar band name here
6) mid paced mellower 70’s ballad rock really
7) upbeat rock, dude, head nodding, fist raising anthem to partying, dude, complete with piano 8th note chords
8) mellower, is this a sad song?
9) near galloping beat, driving rocker needlesstosay
10) big ass-pounder, rock and fucking roll, with a raise-your-lighters bridge too
