Irish trad/rock from Orange County. Generally more trad than rock, although there’s a bass and trap drum rather than bodhran. Band name refers to Irish nationalists, but it’s pretty obvious that this is an American band, partly due to many of the lyrics, and partly because it really sounds like nothing so much as St. Paddy’s Day at the Plough and Stars, before the really SERIOUS drinking starts…
No FCCs. Tracks 1 and 4 are fun, 5 is a decent political statement.
1. 3:27 **obligatory Irish drinking song. Spirited romp with tin whistle.
2. 4:24 Uptempo banjo number about his girl leaving (because he’s in jail). Vocal harmonies and train-inspired drum. Groovy sax solo.
3. 4:40 starts with just vocal and drum, then midtempo flute and full band. Song about a cheating husband sung with Irish accent.
4. 5:19 **Midtempo waltz about fertility drugs causing triskadeptuplets. Amusing lyrics with actual “diddly aye die” chorus. Uptempo ending.
5. 4:16 *Midtempo oft-covered Ewan MacColl number about the rigors of vagrancy. That’s “shift” with an “F”, don’t worry. Last verse just vocals.
6. 5:09 Real weeper about a guy sentenced to death for his part in the Irish revolution marrying his girl in jail on the eve of his execution. Slow and sad.
7. 4:37 Take a few seconds to start. Nice harmonies. Midtempo number about a midnight tryst.
8. 4:12 Fife and drum band number about how Irish fought with the South as well as North in US civil war.
9. 6:20 Long melancholy sax intro into midtempo number about being a long way from Ireland and drinking too much. Very long fade out at end.
10. 5:14 Slowish acoustic number about reasons for leaving home. A bit overly pretty. Another very long fade out at end.
11. 5:23 Slow with cello. Sappy love song.
12. 4:47 Terribly, terribly Irish. All about drinking and being on the dole. Definitely for St. Pat’s day – a bit cute and clever for every day. Actually ends about 30 seconds before time listed, probably to make way for “hidden track”.
13. 1:48 midtempo instrumental with pipes – nice, but ends short and messy.
