Han Bennink - "Amplified Trip" CD (Treader)
Busy, squirly, loud, even rocking, percussion based free improv. Cacophonous. A trio of drums, electric guitar and electronics/samples. Bennink is Dutch and one of the worlds most amazing living percussionists. He's been playing jazz, rock and improvising since the early 60s when he played with ERIC DOLPHY and since then has played on nearly 200 releases with people from WILLEM BREUKER to PETER BROTZMANN and THE EX to EVAN PARKER to SPRING HEAL JACK.
**1. A 20 minute loud noisy track. About 5 minutes into the track they quiet down a bit and someone makes some funny moaning vocal noises. About 7 minutes in Bennink really works the cymbals. At one point with about 5 minutes left on the track, they stop on a dime and change completely to a different more minimal improvisation. It really does sound like a different track. This track is a great fun ride of busy improv. I don't like the last 5:56 at all. Consider stopping the track with 5:56 left.
2. Slower more drawn out sounds from the guitar. I couldn't hear many electronics.
3. Very quiet first couple minutes with subtle scraping noises from drums and guitar. Some odd electronics come in. Squirly with quick changes but still not busy. Those electronic sounds bug me.
4. Another track that starts very quiet. Pretty waves of electronics and prickly but minimal guitar. The track stays quiet and minimal for the most part with small bursts of one of the players every once in a while. Funny marching beat towards the end, as if Bennink is say, "hey, I'm bored.".
**5. Builds in a busy noisy improv. Some nice crunching guitar about halfway through. The guitar and drums quiet way down giving way to an electronic drone.
6. Short. Lots of reverb on the guitar.
**7. Prickly guitar and electronic drone. Ends with a nice improv with each player on equal level.
Good stuff -mph
