SUSIE ARIOLI: Christmas Dreaming
Jazzheads, 2012
HOLIDAY JAZZ – Montreal’s long-running swing tandem of singer Susie Arioli and guitarist Jordan Officer puts together a classic Xmas album in their signature sound: simple, intimate, warm and comforting as a yule log, with a bit of country and bluegrass in the mix too (3,4,9). This is a really nice choice if you want to mix in some holiday cheer.
All nice. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10
1. 4:10 – gentle, warm, heartfelt: Arioli caresses the melody
2. 2:54 – upbeat, gently swinging stroll
3. 3:17 – an Elvis Xmas, upbeat with some nice vocal harmony
4. 3:37 – bluegrass Xmas, sways gently with mandolin & vocal harmony
5. 3:37 – light, snappy backing to a romantic vocal
6. 3:35 – swings easy; vocal line has a Billie Holiday touch
7. 4:57 – slow & sweet: this Disney classic is a different choice, but fits
8. 3:11 – flowing Argentinean tune: such a lovely sound; sung in Spanish
9. 2:18 – a Roger Miller Xmas: upbeat but gentle as a lullaby
10. 3:00 – easygoing sweet swing, very nice vocal & restrained guitar
11. 3:28 – gentle sway: a nice tune you probably haven’t heard before
12. 2:17 – classic hymn with ringing guitar and hushed vocal harmony
