Ursula Mamlok (1923-2016) fled Nazi Germany and ultimately became an American citizen. She taught at NYU, City U of NY, Temple. et al., and received multiple awards for her compositions and commissions from SF Symphony, Eastman School of Music et al. She describes her music as “colorful, with the background of tonality – tonal centers . . . the music should convey the various emotions in it with clarity and conviction . . . to give the impression of ever-new ideas that are like the flowers of a plant.” This CD’s works are mildly dissonant, but tuneful, often whimsical. Mamlok’s descriptive titles accurately convey the pieces’ moods. Sonata in A Minor 1st mvmt puts a pleasing melody thru variations; 2nd mvmt is playful. Moto Vivo is alternately jovial and ponderous. Allegro for Violin and Piano is serious, becomes urgent and ends in happy resolution. Sonata for Violin and Piano 1st mvmt is discordant, tentative; 2nd mvmt exhausted; 3rd mvmt energetic, exploring a modest-sized space. Fünf Phantasiestücke’s descriptive titles translate as: Restless, Pending, Blithely, Like a Dream, Playful. Breezes I is reflective then agitated; II is mournful.
