Call It Home – California Honey Drops (2018) reviewed by Mr. Bones
So how a does a white, Polish immigrant produce a knock-out soul, jazz, funk double disk that channels the likes of The Meters, Curtis Mayfield and Sly Stone into a captivating modern sound? Perhaps its all those years busking in Bart stations; don't know & don't care, just glad he did. Whether its the ska inspired Coming Home or the soulish Live Learn, it is hard to believe that just five guys can make such a big, joyful sound (albeit with a help from friends, including Bonnie Riatt). Pick any track, you can't go wrong with this release (except Vol I, track 7)
Vol I (more uptempo)
* #1 Call it Home - slow, swap-funk with band firing on all cylinders & Bonnie Riatt
on 2nd vocals (3:42)
* #2 Coming Around - delicious soul number with nice Brazilian/ska accents &
killer bass (6:47)
* #3 Cry For Me - splendid Mardi Gras tune, think Bourbon Street (3:22)
* #4 Standing Still Blue - slow blues number with great piano & guitar (3:53)
* #5 Hold It Down - Red hot New Orleans funk (3:46)
* #6 Your Sweet Love - slow, sweet love song featuring LW's sweet falsetto and
trumpet (4:02)
#7 Those Days - slow, heavily orchestrated love song (4:05)
* #8 Live Learn - mid-tempo blues/soul ala Curtis Mayfield (4:34)
Vol II (slower & more traditional)
* #1 Only Home I've Ever Known - down-tempo acoustic with nice vocals &
trumpet (4:05)
* #2 Silicon World - bluesy lament about life with too much silicon (3:45)
* #3 Tell Me (I Wanna Know) - bouncy blues with mean trumpet break (4:39)
* #4 Drop by Drop - slow song about a lazy summer day with one's beau (3:25)
* #5 Good Good Lovin' - bouncy, swap-pop acoustic love song ala Jessie
Winchester (2:58)
* #6 Things We Used To Do - playful, down & dirty with great horns (3:34)
* #7 Im My Baby's Arms - drop dead beautiful with a LW's great falsetto and a
syncopated beat
*#8 Starr Child - bouncy fantasy number about child from another world with
spacey, improvisational break (6:31)
* Mr. Bones especially likes these
