Amoebotics - Greg Schatz & The Friggin’ Geniuses
In his 7th release Schatz provides a sound that is as well crafted as it is quirky. Illiterate your listeners on such existential topics as the demise of the working stiff through robots and brain eating amoeba while entertaining them with superb musicianship that deftly combines pop, jazz, Tex-Mex and Rhumba. And don’t worry about our future, Schatz opines that we’re all destined to return to the primordial ooze from whence we came.
Note: CD includes shortened version of longer cuts
RIYL: Tom Waits, Mose Allision, Martin Mull
*1 Not Even Close - mid-tempo, jazzy rumba style with nice piano break about not being good enough for his SO (3:28)
**2 I’m Building A Robot – mid-tempo, lovely toe-tapper about building a robot to take my job building robots (4:45 & 3:32)
*3 Machines Are Building Machines - mid-tempo fun & quirky with a mechanistic sound (4:45 & 3:50)
*4 I’m An Animal – bouncy number reminding us that we’re all just animals (5:02)
5 Mechanism – techno instrumental ala Laurie Anderson (1:59)
*6 The Amoeba – Haunting rhumba-esque story of the amoeba that might eat your brain (4:40)
7 All I Do Is Ooze – Ode to the fun life of microbes with nice violin (4:29 & 3:58)
8 Protoplasm – jazzy piano instrumental (3:42)
9 The Water – jazzy, light & tranquil story of returning to the water (5:49)
