ALTERNATIVE FOLK-ROCK / AMERICANA
Tough, gritty Americana from Shovels & Rope, a duo out of Charleston, SC. Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst are husband and wife songwriters, singers, and multi-instrumentalists. They each perform & record separately and have been teaming up as Shovels & Rope since 2008. Most songs feature excellent duet singing. Lyrics are printed on the package. I like all the tracks and had to force myself to star some favorites.
No FCC issues
1 Mid-tempo. Raucous & loud expression of personal courage & perseverance. (3:44)
2 * Mid-fast, spirited. I’m better than my situation. Compelling organ & drums. (3:52)
3 * Mid-fast. Tough swagger. Rebellious attitude. Excellent playing & singing. (2:57)
4 ** Mid-slow. Acoustic folk song about getting through hard times. Terrific! (3:47)
5 Mid-slow, melancholy ballad. The verses drag a bit, but the refrain is gorgeous. (4:41)
6 Slow. Old-timey style. Something terrible is hinted at. Cute but gimmicky. (3:43)
7 ** Mid-tempo. Acoustic folk song. Depressing words, beautiful song. Love it! (4:21)
8 * Mid-fast. Fun, Buddy Holly-like rockabilly sound about a girl who died. (3:15)
9 Mid-tempo. Basement Tapes-style lo-fi, faux old time, goofy. (4:15)
10 ** Slow & somber ballad. Superb title track. Acoustic guitar with synths. (3:40)
