BLUES ROCK
Here’s a nicely done song-by-song cover by the excellent Tedeschi Trucks Band of the 1970 album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, by a love-sick & tormented Eric Clapton and his short-lived band, Derek & the Dominoes. That original record was made in studio by 5 musicians; this one was recorded live in August 2019 by 14. Susan and Derek are joined by sometime member Doyle Bramhall II and special guest Trey Anastasio, so we’re up to 4 guitars and 3 lead singers. To that front row, add a keyboard player, 2 drummers, backing singers & a horn section. You’ll dig this if you’re into classic rock and/or Southern blues rock (eg Allman Bros). All tracks are good; some are very good. Interesting notes & pix in enclosed booklet.

1 Mid-tempo ballad about a missed chance at love. (3:16)
2 Slow ballad. Trey & Susan don’t quite reach Eric’s level of grief. (4:52)
3 * Mid-fast high-energy jam-band extravaganza. Quad guitars; team singing. (12:02)
4 * Mid-tempo blues classic, once sung by Bessie Smith. Susan sings it well. (5:00)
5 * Mid-slow, pretty love song. Sweetly sung. Superb slide guitar. (3:44)
6 ** Mid-to-fast. A highlight of the original album & a highlight of this one too. Strong harmony singing between awesome instrumental jams. Fade out. (13:17)

7 ** Classic blues by Big Bill Broonzy. Dueling lead guitar solos. This one rocks! (8:43)
8 * Mid-tempo. A staple of Clapton concerts forever. Good stuff, not in the top few. (7:07)
9 * Fast. Susan ably channels Eric’s unrequited love but it’s the guitars that rule. (8:28)
10 ** Mid-slow. A great 60s blues/R&B tune in 12-bar form done by both Jackie Wilson and Freddie King. Susan shines; Derek shreds. Another highlight of the album. (8:21)
11 * Slow & soulful. Another worthy cover of Jimi’s “Little Wing” (compare to Stevie Ray Vaughn and Gil Evans). Again, the many layered guitars rule. (6:54)
12 ** Mid-tempo. Strong vocal duet by Doyle & Susan faithfully mimics Clapton’s and Bobby Whitlock’s original. Bite size: play this if you can’t fit one of the long jams. (3:52)
13 The famous title track is ok but doesn’t tear your heart out like the original. Trucks can match Duane Allman’s slide guitar, but Tedeschi’s usually strong singing doesn’t reach Clapton’s total heartbreak. Piano & slide-guitar coda; birds; spoken ‘thank you’. (9:06)
14 Slow, pretty, sad ballad. This one is just Susan & Derek recorded in studio. (2:45)
