This is a collection of reggae by a variety of mostly well-known Jamaican reggae musicians. Names like Capleton, Elephant Man, Glen Washington, Beenie Man, and Morgan Heritage may be familiar. The music tends to be somewhat slow-to-medium paced. Vocals range from smooth R&B style crooning (think Garnett Silk) to rough, gruff dancehall style rapping (think Buju Banton). Most of the tracks share similarities – an organ used to keep a beat, steel drum, layered vocals. According to the inner sleeve, the songs are also supposed to have a spiritual message. My picks:
1.Soulful singing with a story, with a number of neat sounds going on.
5.Nice, prominent organ playing, with a sort of husky-tender voice.
8.Real simple beat (identical to the beat in 7) with really fast rapping that makes it cool.
9.One of the better-known Jamaican voices. Very sparse musical arrangement with distinctive vocals.
10.Energetic in comparison with the others. Vocals have a slight echo to them, but the background is very simple.
15.Slight-electronic feel to it. Fast, incomprehensible rapping. Kind of a confusing track, but in a good way.
19.Very poppy reggae (stereotypical Beenie Man), but it’s entertaining.
