KFSR 90.7: A Salute to Fresno Bands - Greatest Unknown Hits
Quick - can you name any bands from Fresno? I can't, but what the hell do I know? Here are 21 of 'em, put together by KFSR from CSU-Fresno. They did a good job of picking a varied set of bands - rock, funk, hip-hop, surf, jazz. The rock tracks are not especially mind-blowing, mostly generic college rock, but there are some semi-precious gems hidden amongst the non-rock tracks. The surf track is good (#20) as are the jazz/funk (#6), hiphop (#13), blues (#18). Track 21 about building up a tolerance to codeine was especially a favorite. Also, I'm not sure why, but the liner notes clearly state: "TO BE PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME"
Picks: 21, 6, 20, 13, 18, 12, 17
1. rock
2. spacey pop, interesting voice, pretty good
3. too radio-friendly
4. female rock - a la PJ Harvey/Patti Smith
5. modern rock
6. funk/jazz - like Herbie Hancock
7. hip-hop/jazz/funk, play their own instruments, somewhat cheesy
8. electro-poppy dance hit
9. more indie pop
10. goth! in fresno!
11. instrumental - flamenco guitar plus percussion
12. sad, slow, folk/indie -- good
13. hip-hop - 5 MC's
14. jazz/reggae/funk fusion
15. "adult-oriented indie pop" about coffee houses - yuck!
16. moody indie pop - nasally voice
17. bossa nova beats -- like Lee Press On & the Nails
18. back door blues - great!
19. generic guitar rock
20. surf! rockin'! fast!
21. live track
