SIDESTEPPER ā 3am (In Beats We Trust)
Palm Pictures, 2003
Richard Blair is a record producer from Britain who for years has been deeply involved in the Colombian music scene. In his alter ego as DJ Sidestepper, he combines the latest sounds from Colombia with British drum 'n' bass. This is his second full release. Along for the ride are several high-profile Colombian artists, including songwriter Ivan Benavides, percussionist Roberto Cuao, and singer Liliana Montes. I believe the first Sidestepper album went D2M.
This record is downright boring in my opinion, but it's been charting high at CMJ, so I guess we'll give it a shot.
Fo's Picks: 2, 5, 8, 10
1. midtempo: repetitive, a bit dubby
2. perky beat, good vox (ragga break)
3. dancehall vox, rather insipid overall
4. good horns & vox over muddy mix
5. cute synth, ragga vox, hand drums
6. a straight ballad over drum ānā bass thing
7. like track 6, but synths more prominent
8. lively and pleasant, mostly acoustic
9. low-key english & ragga vox+drum+bass
10. pretty chorus over quiet synth backing
