This album, the latest by Georgia band Of Montreal, is an excellent collection of mostly upbeat psych pop songs. The addition of hand claps, flute, an organ, interesting time changes, and background vocal harmonies keeps the various tracks interesting. While the songs are mostly about love, the lyrics are far from mindless with lines like "Gloomy Erebus is an anathema to me" and "so vertiginous lost in lysergic bliss." This album would work well on any show playing pop. Most tracks are good, but a few picks are 1,2,4(FCC),6,8.
1. midpaced, upbeat pop song with hand claps and pretty organ, very simple, but pretty
2. midpaced, fun pop, incorporates multiple dramatic time changes
3. midpaced, somewhat bizarre song, ends with a nice instrumental section
4. FCC - cute, upbeat song about the band's trip to England, includes an 8 second section near the end with just percussion
5. faster, fairly upbeat song, about the confusion of the start of love
6. midpaced, pretty, more downbeat song, about his inability to get anything but sad love, nice cello
7. slower, quieter, acoustic song, more downbeat, pretty flute
8. midpaced, stronger psych elements, less peppy than some of the earlier tracks
9. faster, funny song about necrophilia
10. midpaced, upbeat song about the effects of love, nice use of keyboard, more pronounced psych sound
11. pretty, midpaced song, Beach Boys sound, nice use of background harmony vocals
12. harder, more rocklike song, drums and lyrics cut in and out, highlighting various instruments
13. slow-midpaced song, pretty, more upbeat
14. midpaced, interesting fusion of a disco type beat with psych
