MARISA MONTE – “Universo ao meu redor”

BRAZIL – classic samba viewed through a modern lens: acoustic guitar and cavaquinho (ukelele) provide grounding as samples waft thru like smoke. Monte’s vocals are charming perfection. There’s very little variety on this disc, but it’s a pleasing sound, and well produced.
1. 3:11 – happy, lazy midtempo, catchy tune, gentle samba rhythm
2. 4:03 – steady midtempo; cello gives it an aching feel, unfinished ending
3. 3:13 – upbeat, lilting melody; happy tuba, floats away at end
4. 4:10 – pensive, tropical daydream: catchy hook, slinky melody
5. 3:14 – shimmering, upbeat & relaxed: whistling under vox, a little tuba
6. 3:05 – vocals stroll through a forest of harps, rhythm kicks in later
7. 3:50 – romantic midtempo, with lovely cello accents & electric piano
8. 1:13 – short, oddball duet with David Byrne! human beat box, theremin
9. 3:29 – relaxed and sparkling, very much like #1
10. 4:31 – cute, jumbled dreamlike fantasy w/ harp & organ
11. 3:09 – light & breezy, sing-song middle with whistling, drifts away…
12. 3:16 – quiet but upbeat: just voice, guitar, bassoon, brushed snare drum
13. 4:00 – atmospheric intro, then an unsettled air w/ cello, 2 clarinets
14. 2:33 – hushed: echoey vox, slow bass, melancholy cello / bassoon
