Rodriguez, Rico & the Roots to the Bone Band – Togetherness
Reviewed by Sadie O., 11/2/06
Live, mostly instrumental ska and roots reggae from the venerable Jamaican trombone-master. Rodriguez has been a top ska session man in both Jamaica and England since the 50’s, and for the past two or three decades has fronted his own outfit with huge international success. These live tracks were recorded in Buenas Aires just a few years ago, and fortunately have very little audience noise, and a terrific horn section (judging from the names, they seem to be locals).
No FCCs – only a few vocals, all upful. Everything is nice, 11 is best.
1. 2:51 *opens with audience noises for a few seconds, then midtempo snaky skank. ends witih a few seconds of audience cheering.
2. 6:31 ** uptempo, happy ska, great tune and several different nice horn solos.
3. 7:47 **midtempo roots skank, a bit downbeat in mood, getting pretty stoned by the end.
4. 7:13 **midtempo ska, swingy groove with a fantastic marimba solo.
5. 6:30 ***downtempo stepping razor skank.
6. 5:12 *downtempo roots rock with a slight ska inflection, relaxed vibe.
7. 5:49 **a few seconds of crowd noises and rasta talk, then bassline and upbeat ska version of Rodriguez’ big hit.
8. 10:18 **slightly uptempo roots rock with lots of keyboard, very laid back until the horns start skanking. A bit of singing! Must be another hit, because the audience is singing, too. Great song for a long bathroom break…
9. 5:06 *midtempo swingy ska
10. 6:37 ***midtempo, nicely syncopated roots rock, cool jam with dubby bits.
11. 6:28 ****upbeat skank with a bit of singing. Offkey, but who’s counting? You have to love a lyric like “every time I hear them cheer, I feel like drinking a Red Stripe beer”…
12. 7:18 **upbeat Latin-tinged ska, booty shaker, some singing, “Rudy Can’t Fail” vibe. Lots of love here…
