THE WEE TRIO: Capitol Diner, Vol. 1
Bionic, 2008
MODERN JAZZ – This young vibes/bass/drums trio is truly something new, with a fresh sound and infectious energy. Vibes cast a dreamlike melodic gauze over skittering, high-tension drum grooves, while chewy bass lines hold the two strands together. This is a tremendous debut.
James Westfall - vibraphone
Dan Loomis - bass
Jared Schonig - drums
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 7, 10
1. 6:38 – catchy Kurt Cobain tune: shimmering vibes over a fantastic beat
2. 0:31 – overlapped whispers & rolling vibes, the intro to…
3. 6:51 – all cylinders clicking… propulsive yet expressive, fine bass & drums
4. 7:54 – gentle melody, reflections of innocence and surges of energy
5. 7:32 – low-key, relaxed melody; fascinating drum work all over this one
6. 4:13 – minor-key take on a standard gives it a bit of pathos and drama
7. 4:09 – quick-paced glide, hard to pin down but following a clear progression
8. 5:56 – easygoing rhythm and contemplative melody, flows & stutters
9. 3:41 – Sufjan Stevens tune: slow, moody shuffle; delicate edge, bell tones
10. 5:42 – Thelonious Monk tune, a playfully quirky swinger
