ARTURO STABLE QUINTET: Call
Origen, 2009
MODERN LATIN JAZZ – This striking collision between Afro-Cuban rhythm and modern jazz harmonics further establishes percussionist Stable as a force to be reckoned with. He has a fabulous quintet here featuring Spanish saxophonist Javier Vercher and fellow Cuban Aruan Ortiz on piano. Strong rhythms, brainy melodies and emotional depth.
Arturo Stable - percussion
Javier Vercher - saxophones, flute
Aruan Ortiz - piano
Edward Perez - bass
Francisco Mela - drums
* * * * | All very good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10
1. 5:38 – heavy: deep rhythm, anthemic melody, acidic sax and moody piano
2. 6:06 – sax wails and scurries over busy percussion; energy and strength
3. 5:52 – breezy midtempo ballad: sensitive piano and excellent bass solo
4. 5:38 – solo percussion intro; hopscotch melody and a poker-face attitude
5. 5:33 – nostalgic ballad; thoughtful bass solo, delicate piano, fine rhythm
6. 5:38 – upbeat contemporary glide, shows a more serious side in the solos
7. 5:57 – slow, somber, billowing waves; a really nice group sound
8. 2:55 – grand intro, then swift-moving boppish line
9. 6:39 – relaxed stroll with elegant piano harmony; tension mounts & ebbs
10. 6:16 – exotic caravan pulse, layers of percussion and horns build up
