Chris Joss – Monomaniacs Vol. 1
Reviewed by Sadie O., 2/10/10
Terrific funk instrumentals from a French multi-instrumentalist and producer. Sounds like the best bits of the 70’s. That said, it has much the same sort of sound all the way through, but it’s such a good sound… I’m gonna use this for my soundbeds, and it’ll make even me sound sexy.
All great – I like 3, 6, 8, 10, 11 best.
1. 4:11 **upbeat and uptempo funk with prominent farfisa – a bit jazzy, but all delicious.
2. 3:01 ***uptempo with farfisa and keyboard up front. Bits of gnarly wah wah and electronics. Gets yummier and yummier.
3. 2.40 ****uptempo with groovy “sitar” sounds.
4. 3:25 ***slight false start, then funky, bass-y march. Bad-ASS.
5. 3:27 **uptempo with keyboards and cowbell.
6. 3:23 ****midtempo bass-y strut with grunting keyboard – great sound.
7. 3:30 **uptempo with farfisa – more in the higher register.
8. 3:06 ****downtempo sashay in the bongolicious vein.
9. 3:03 **uptempo…
10. 3:27 ****midtempo, bass-heavy, progression builds nicely.
11. 3:26 ****very different! Very downtempo, very jazzy, stand-up bass and keyboards.
12. 3:25 ***midtempo funk strut, great beat. Oooh, vibes!
