ANAT COHEN: Clarinetwork
Anzic, 2010
SWING – One of the best clarinetists in mainstream jazz today, Cohen swings like mad in this lively quartet set, recorded live at the famed Village Vanguard during a centennial tribute to Benny Goodman. She’s never been a stranger to this music, but hearing a whole CD of it really shows off her aggressive mastery and vibrant musical personality.
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
1. 7:25 – moves at a jaunty tempo: clarinet solo really heats up, zesty piano
2. 13:47 – lovely intro, then steady swing: each player gets a chance to dig in
4. 10:16 – lowdown blues: clarinet moans, wails, screams; piano testifies
5. 8:17 – brisk tempo: clarinet flies high, piano gets real tricky, rhythm drives
6. 12:30 – lazy blues: piano stroll, really good clarinet, bass solo, scat vocal!
7. 9:13 – relaxed ballad: very nice group sound, extra-sweet clarinet and piano
8. 7:23 – jolly bounce: piano trips along, clarinet takes off, drummer gets some
