Battles does it again! 12 tracks of math-rock brilliance from a legendary lineup which includes Ian Williams of Don Cabellero fame and former Helmet drummer John Stanier. A sophisticated masterpiece of layering with busy intelligent loops and superhuman precision. FCC CLEAN
*1. Slow intro with scattershot keyboard and layered guitar. Slowly builds to a frantic percussive breakdown with jivey guitars. *2. A 40-second intro of jumbled grunts and a slow crescendo of keyboard launches into a midtempo post-modern rocker with catchy keyboard and plenty of pop aesthetics. Guest vox from Matias Aguayo. Definitely a stand-out. *3. Midtempo instrumental track with killer organ lines. Epic as hell. 4. Energetic, almost with a tropical feel to it.
5. An unabashed showcase of Stanier’s brilliance. A high-speed rocker with aggressive lines. *6. Frantic rocker peppered w/ cheery keyboard despite its somewhat darker feel. *7. Handclaps, syncopated percussion, sunny keyboard, killer electronic effects. *8. Classic Battles math-rock with distorted plucky guitar, rattling keyboard, and sticky sweet female vox courtesy of Kazu Makino.
9. Slow, minimalist keyboard. Heavy reverb. 10. Harsh, noisy intro leads into a gnarly collage of clattering percussion and echoed keyboard sounds.
11. White-hot guitar, thundering drums and perfect layers of keyboards.
*12. Sparse… atmospheric…almost lighthearted. Echoed, distorted vocals.
