LES DOIGTS DE L’HOMME: 1910
Alma, 2011
GYPSY JAZZ – A fine French quartet (3 guitars + bass, all acoustic) pays homage to the hard-swinging style of Django Reinhardt with one of the best discs in this style in the last couple of years. The playing is absolutely first rate with some great picking, a cheerful spirit and fierce solos. There’s also a bit of Parisian musette along with some quirky arrangements. If you’ve already discovered the wonders of Django, this will not disappoint. If you haven’t, this would be a good place to start.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 13, 15, 17
1. 4:38 – a solid, chunky swinger
2. 3:38 – upbeat, with flying guitars
3. 3:06 – uptempo, sweeping waltz
4. 2:35 – fun swinger, lots of quotes
5. 4:06 – calm intro, then driving
6. 4:20 – slow and slinky standard
7. 3:03 – upbeat, swings lightly
8. 3:48 – gorgeous bolero w/clarinet
9. 2:06 – bright, quick-jabbing swing
10. 5:35 – bittersweet musette waltz
11. 3:43 – midtempo, very bouncy
12. 5:12 – melancholy, with clarinet
13. 3:32 – a very gentle, quirky flow
14. 4:10 – weird intro to a fast drive
15. 3:43 – gentle ballad, very sweet
16. 3:21 – midtempo, upbeat swing
17. 2:43 – nice solo guitar work
