Origin, 2011
MODERN JAZZ – Originally from Slovakia, this Netherlands-based piano & vibraphone duo adds bass, drums and an agile string trio for a beautifully original sound. Pretty, episodically structured tunes pick up quirky rhythms, spinning, weaving through deep interplay, and taking off in sweeping flights of fancy. Very nice music, and quite unique.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4
1. 8:48 – a perky, breezy drive, chills out in the middle for bass & vibes breaks
2. 7:36 – such a graceful tune: soft dancing balladry builds up to striding peaks
3. 2:06 – strings move in a restless pas de deux
4. 11:33 – a series of simple themes repeat and expand, solos airy but driving
5. 11:39 – upbeat, jabbing start; funky rhythm for piano solo, elegant for vibes
6. 2:04 – another string interlude, relaxed and intertwined
7. 3:04 – a slow, heavy procession fades in, trudges forward, dies out
