Wonderland is from Houston and plays a nice mix of blues, rock, soul. She’s got that Janis Joplin sound in her voice and demeanor and out comes some powerful soulful singing. She plays guitar and has some great players behind her. Half originals and half covers, this album covers a lot of ground and covers it well. Produced in part by Larry Campbell (Levon Helm, Hot Tuna, etc. etc.) No FCC’s.
*My Favorites*: 2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11.
1. (4:03) Mid. Janis Joplin song and done quite well. Wonderland channels a bit of that Janis vibe with her soulful vocals. Tight band.
2. *(3:56) Mid / Fast. Driving beat, some mean guitar work and a strong vocal.
3. *(3:40) Mid. New Orleans organ, piano, gospel tinged with backing vocals.
4. (4:01) Mid. Percussion-driven easy-going blues. Good organ work.
5. (7:06) Slow / Mid. Vince Welnick and Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead) song. Has that GD pacing and feel, Nice version.
6. *(2:43) Mid / Fast. Robert Johnson song. Serious house-rockin’ take with blazing guitar, killer beat and great piano. Wonderland shines on the vocals.
7. (4:58) Mid. Really soulful delivery, cool guitar work and strong backbeat.
8. *(3:17) Slow / Mid. A bit psyche, a bit blues, quite different. Killer.
9. *(3:23) Mid / Fast. Rockin’ with killer organ tethering it down under the percussion and guitar. Nice.
10. *(5:41) Slow. Bob Dylan song. Done quite differently than Bob’s original. With organ and Wonderland’s vocal-only phrases. Really soulful.
11. *(3;58) Mid. Muddy Waters song. Band gets rockin’, Wonderland belts it out. Cool keys and drumming. Invokes some Allman Brothers.
12. (3:50) Mid. Folky, country song with mandolin, acoustic guitar. Very nice.
