CHRISTIAN McBRIDE: Conversations with Christian
Mack Avenue, 2011
MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Lively duets between bass master McBride and a string of star performers, mostly jazz people but with Sting, Angelique Kidjo and actress Gina Gershon mixing it up a bit. Lots of fun; really shows off McBride’s rich, fat tone and pure musicality.
Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10
1. 4:28 – with Angelique Kidjo (vocal): upbeat African song, happy & catchy
2. 4:41 – with Regina Carter (violin): starts with Bach, switches to blues walk
3. 4:23 – with Sting (acoustic guitar/vocal): typical Sting cool-cat stroll
4. 6:18 – with Eddie Palmieri (piano): romantic intro, then strong latin groove
5. 5:22 – with Roy Hargrove (trumpet): straight-up jazz standard, light & airy
6. 7:12 – with Billy Taylor (piano): slow gospel, very tender and heartfelt
7. 5:13 – with Dee Dee Bridgewater (vocal): sassy, sexy funk… yowza!
8. 5:38 – with Hank Jones (piano): easygoing standard, becomes a lively walk
9. 5:35 – with George Duke (piano): bright, snappy walk, a quick-tempo blues
10. 9:11 – with Chick Corea (piano): dramatic tango-based improvisation
11. 6:45 – with Russell Malone (guitar): cool soulful stroll, very nice interplay
12. 5:36 – with Ron Blake (tenor sax): relaxed, upbeat boppin’ jam
13. 6:44 – with Gina Gershon (jews harp): playful blues + really goofy banter
