TRANSVALUE: Book III – The ’58 Retractable Hardtop Thankyou, 2007 Gonzo mix of beat poetry and avant-garde jazz out of LA, with some great players. Chuck Britt growls out humorous, angry or philosophical poems (many about family or crises of the self) with gusto, and the band is all over the place. There’s more than a touch of Frank Zappa in here… it’s weird and wild and wonderful, how can you not love it? Simply awesome. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10 1. 3:14 – strange poem over blasting tango fanfare 2. 17:03 – the magnum opus: a great story over big-band jazz swirls, ominous grooves, cheesy ‘50s retro, modern classical, circus music… wow. 3. 7:14 – self-reflective poem with “hummingbird” over slouching ballad 4. 5:47 – piano spars with alto sax, then a love poem of sorts w/cheesy vox 5. 3:53 – angry anti-war poem within dark, heavy march with fuzz bass 6. 11:27 – theatrical, with multiple vocalists & ever-changing musical settings 7. 4:37 – serious poem over fatigued sax/trombone dialogue; 8. 5:41 – poem about dance (or is it?), as band bounces from style to style 9. 3:00 – FCC (“fucking”) another father/son poem over abstract electronics 10. 8:05 – surreal poem, band is bursting with optimism; long drum solo 11. 6:56 – Chuck sings! Or warbles, anyway… it’s a ballad. [ Fo ] 14-Jun-08 |
