CHARLES GAYLE TRIO: Streets
Northern Spy, 2012

AVANT-GARDE – Sax rebel Gayle, working here in his alter-ego character of Streets the Clown, has a really distinct sound on this disc: out there, not following any rules, but with a lot of soul in his gruff, warbling tone. The trio doesn’t go for earth-shaking energy and there are clear melodic ideas at the heart of most of these pieces – one gets the impression they could almost be played as straight jazz, but instead they clomp off and wail in their own acidic, sour way.

All similar, so try any. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5

1. 5:16 – midtempo lumpy feel: sax moves from honks to dense smears
2. 6:43 – spare and sneaky: very expressive sax, and I love the bass here
3. 9:13 – a bit more energy: sax pokes and hollers, active drums, cool bass
4. 10:35 – tells a story: close, slouched trio interplay, some circus references
5. 9:25 – soulful march drifts into uptempo chase and back, solid trio sound
6. 10:47 – slower, more melancholy, but busy drums push it; strong solos
7. 8:32 – aggressively squeaky sax, very agitated overall
