FORWARD ENERGY: The Awakening
Edgetone, 2012
FREE JAZZ – This incarnation of Jim Ryan’s noisy Bay Area crew includes saxophonist Rent Romus and Scott Looney on piano. The pieces have loosely defined structures, sometimes just an orientation (2), or tightly coordinated (3), or with a round of jazzy solos (5), but the playing within those bounds sounds fully improvisational, with lots of sudden variations in the energy and volume level. Stays way out.
Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 6, 7, 8
1. 5:39 – cartoonish intro; short solo turns over bouncy chaos; sax dialogue
2. 3:57 – flute & prepared piano; band gradually fills up empty space
3. 4:35 – near-silent murmurs, with sudden BIG BLASTS at odd moments
4. 6:11 – quietly slumped over; sax/trumpet moan and poke at each other
5. 12:53 – sustained high energy: stretchy horns argue; solo space for all
6. 5:25 – lots of rattles & clunks, like the saxes are rooting around in the attic
7. 13:03 – cool intro, moody quintet, energy rises, freakout, bass pulls it back
8. 6:45 – chattering argument: saxes/piano bounce off each other, gets noisy
9. 4:30 – calm flute in unstable space: quick slash & spike interjections
10. 9:32 – grunts & groans, near-melodic surges and clashing lines
[ Fo ] - February 2012
