The Trio in Bb Maj., D. 898 was composed in Schubert’s (1797-1828) last year of life and published 8 years after his death. It contains beautiful melodies. He composed the Trio Movement in Bb Maj. at age 15, while a student of Mozart’s rival, Antonio Salieri. It is mellifluous and elegant, with a lyrical 2nd subject. Robert Schumann considered the Eb Maj. Trio, D. 897 “more spirited, masculine and dramatic. . . like some angry portent in the sky” in contrast to the Bb Maj. Trio. The arpeggione was a 6-stringed hybrid of the cello and the guitar, held between the knees and bowed. Now arranged for cello, the Sonata for Arpeggione and Piano is at turns melancholy and ebullient.

1. Disc A [64:15]. Schubert: Trio in Bb Maj., D. 898 (15:13) I. Allegro. Jubilant, with a songful, ardent 2nd theme.
2. (10:59) Schubert: Trio in Bb Maj., D. 898, II. Andante un poco mosso. A suave opening melody, followed by anxiety, and then tenderness.
3. (7:10) Schubert: Trio in Bb Maj., D. 898, III. Scherzo: Allegro. Delightful, fast moving.
4. (8:43) Schubert: Trio in Bb Maj., D. 898, IV, Rondo, Allegro vivace. Main theme is playful, stylish, with a rustic 2nd theme.
5. (9:42) Schubert: Notturno Eb Maj., D. 897 (Op. 148). A calm story of love leads to soon evident passion, ending in sadness.
6. (11:55) Schubert: Trio Movement in Bb Maj., (“Sonatensatz”) D. 28. Serious, even dramatic declamation.

1. Disc B [74:07]. Schubert: Trio in Eb Maj., D. 929 (16:21) I. Allegro. Fiery opening theme, with witty, pathetic 2nd theme, and suave 3rd theme.
2. (10:11) Schubert: Trio in Eb Maj., D. 929, II. Andante con moto. Bittersweet cello melody, later passion and protest, with a despairing climax.
3. (7:01) Schubert: Trio in Eb Maj., D. 929, III. Scherzando: Allegro Moderato. Elegant charm, dance-like character.
4. (13:45) Schubert: Trio in Eb Maj., D. 929, IV. Allegro moderato. Carefree beginning, unexpectedly febrile 2nd subject, passionate episode, and return of 3rd mvmt’s melancholy theme, darkness; last minute “cheerful” ending.
5. (11:53) Schubert: Sonata for Arpeggione & Piano, D. 821. I. Allegro. Imbued with pathos, but with a scurrying 2nd theme.
6. (14:25) Schubert: Sonata for Arpeggione & Piano, D. 821. II. Adagio. A songful serenade, among Schubert’s finest melodies.
