ELIO VILLAFRANCA & ARTURO STABLE: Dos y Mas
Motema, 2012
WORLD JAZZ – Pianist Elio Villafranca and percussionist Arturo Stable, both originally from Cuba, have a wonderful rapport in this set of duets. Drawing from Latin America, Northern Africa and elsewhere, the tunes are deep and soulful, with sparkling melodies and comforting, grounded rhythms. This is music of the heart and spirit. Very nice.
Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 2, 5, 6, 7, 9
1. 7:13 – gentle pulse, firm but soothing rhythms, pretty melody lifts it up
2. 5:36 – steady spinning feel: piano solo stretches and weaves; tough end
3. 5:30 - like lapping waves, building and crashing in bright sprays
4. 5:30 – very cool rhythm and sing-song melody; keeps an even keel
5. 8:07 – solo kalimba, then a heavy but relaxed duo groove
6. 5:37 – dancing tune with a Spanish flair and some drama from piano
7. 4:28 – uptempo latin jazz groove: quick conga and fleet-fingered piano
8. 5:52 – light yet mysterious: piano hides a secret; vocal chorus at end
9. 5:50 – careful start evokes the ocean; billows and falls in open rhythm
10. 7:47 – nostalgic song with vocal; starts straightforward, second half looser
