Plants and Animals is three musicians from Canada who play folky indie-rock with some psychedelic & occasionally spacey touches. Warren Spicer is lead singer / songwriter, and he plays guitars and keyboards. His voice is a slightly high-register tenor, a bit folky and reedy. The others add more guitars, keys, percussion & (deeper tenor & baritone) harmony vox. Tracks 2 & 5 have multiple female harmony singers; track 11 has a pedal steel guitar.
FCC issues on tracks 2 and 3
*** Mid-slow. Sad love song anticipates coming breakup. Nicely layered acoustic and electric guitars. Beautiful three-part male singing. Dreamy feel. (3:57)
** FCC (crap, fucked up) Mid-tempo. Good Cardinals-style alt-country rock. (4:04)
Mild FCC (talkin’ shit) Mid-fast. More of a rock edge. Elec guitars including slide. (4:41)
* Mid-fast. Raucous guitar; desperate, pleading vocals. (3:36)
* Mid-fast. Energetic with a funky rhythm. Semi-sung-rap vocal a bit like Beck. (6:10)
Mid-fast and loud. Good elec guitar lick but not much else. Topic is out of date. (6:35)
Mid-tempo. Nice guitar picking. Seems like just first verse of an unfinished song. (0:52)
* Fast. Alternates soft & loud. Good “classic rock” song, neither folky nor alt. (2:28)
** Fast. Interesting & distinctive. Good guitars. Particularly good lead singing. (4:17)
Mid-slow to mid-fast. Lots of piano & elec guitar. Not as good as some others. (2:35)
** Mid-tempo. Good loud, hard indie-rock. Twin elec guitars; nice vocal. (5:12)
