ALBATROSH: Yonkers
Rune Grammofon, 2011
AVANT-MODERN JAZZ – Very fine sax/piano duets that move in unexpected directions, darting and ducking like sparring boxers, bouncing phrases off each other, then suddenly merging in a single, twisting stream. Lots of avant-garde ideas at work as they fall in and out of abstraction, but nothing that should scare anyone away; this is melodic at the core, often cerebral, but sometimes beautiful.
All very good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8
1. 5:02 – relaxed pacing: piano & sax hop gingerly, then long intertwined lines
2. 3:21 – upbeat boppish sketch warps into free jazz dialogue, very playful
3. 6:28 – careful theme; strange sax flutters & wails against classical piano
4. 7:06 – abstract sax tones and delicate piano, but firm in the middle section
5. 5:04 – quick counterpoint: sax & piano run in circles, slows waaay down
6. 5:36 – ballad-like: sax/piano drift, rejoin, drift again… solo break for piano
7. 6:30 – playful percolation: unison line breaks into distracted wanderings
8. 5:46 – slow, icy beauty: abstract sax tones against a dark piano melody
