Cheers Elephant / Like Wind Blows Fire / Team Clermont / 2012
Indie-Rock Pop. Alto/tenor male vocals.
It’s catchy, has those familiar high-pitched male vocals you hear in Metronomy, Dr. Dog, and Of Montreal, and styles of Local Natives, but not at all in the boring same-old sense. It has its own touches, or maybe more so a mix of a lot of styles. Good for people who like moving, but not thrashing (an occasional toss of the head backwards). Nominated best Indie act in Tri-State area, received praise from many including Bowie, Talking Heads, and King Crimson (really?). (Still unreleased, comes out May 8.)
It’s a general listen, can be played anytime anywhere, usually to cheer up, but only a lil’ (let’s be real. Can’t get fake-happy).
Sounds Like : Local Natives, Dr. Dog, Of Montreal, Spoon, Metronomy
FCC on 6 & 7
Favorites: 2, 4, 6 (FCC), 9, 10
1: “Peoples” - Vocals like Of Montreal, poppy instrumentals, sounds like Metronomy
2:* “Doin’ It, Right” - More poppy. Very catchy (neat chorus), good song for the move
3: “Falling Out” - Very similar to Dr. Dog!! (think of Shadow People) Good stuff though
4:* “Leaves” - Touches of Local Natives, but takes its own lead. Definitely more distinctive, really nice tune, good for anytime of the day. Good listen
5: “Party On Darwin” - Different vocals, more Spoon-ish. Pure Indie-Rock
6:* “Get Ya!” - The exclamation-mark in the title tells it all: faster, funner, jumpier. Percussion rolls, vocals interrupt, and it returns with energy (Local Natives with Of Montreal). FCC.
7: “Thought And Commonsense” - Has odd interruptions that seem off in this band, but the Trumpets are appreciated and it’s definitely more interesting than the others. FCC
8: “Little Dog” - Slower, more backing vocals, more of an ending song. Has some childish voices
9:** “Like Wind Blows Fire” - Very fun, good song to give Album title. Vocals, instruments, all of it is good, makes you bob and “aaah” along
10:* “Balloon In The City” - Starts slower, but has good dreamy muffled vocals with space sounds that give a good feel of a balloon floating above a city. Almost instrumental. Good daydreaming song.
