Tchaikovsky, P., Violin Concerto In D major, Op. 35; Mendelssohn, F., Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64 (Ray Chen, Violin)
Label: Sony Classical, 2012
Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote his elegant, lyrical violin concerto over six years. Its innovations (e.g., a written out cadenza; linking the mvmts) inspired other composers. It remains one of the most frequently performed. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed his violin concerto, no less beautiful, and full of passion, in three weeks on the shores of Lake Geneva, where he had gone to recover from the depression caused by his disastrous marriage. At its 1881 premier, critic Eduard Hanslick wrote, βthe violin was not played but beaten black and blue.β Still, the public has always loved this concerto dearly. Violinist Ray Chen won first prize at the Menuhin Competition (2008), and the Queen Elisabeth competition (2009) playing these concertos.
1. (18:51) Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D Maj., I. Allegro moderato. Drama and soulful melodies, regretting the past, which was stormy.
2. (6:45) Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto, II. Canzonetta: Andante. Red-brown dawn gives way to views of golden fields, and sad peasants.
3. (10:30) Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto, III. Finale: Allegro vivacissimo. Heroic figures scramble across our line of vision, dancing, reminiscing, racing finally to a frenetic, exuberant conclusion.
4. (13:09) Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E Min., I. Allegro molto appassionato. A lovely, questing theme, followed by a tranquil theme, are combined in the development and the innovative cadenza.
5. (8:05) Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto, II. Andante. Lyrical, darker middle section, serene conclusion.
6. (6:30) Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto, III. Allegretto non troppo β Allegro molto vivace. Lively and effervescent.
