AHMAD JAMAL: Blue Moon
Jazz Village, 2012
MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Piano legend Ahmad Jamal is in his 80s now, but you’d never guess it from this fresh, forceful set. His quartet includes both a drummer and a percussionist, giving these soaring originals and reworked standards extra punch and pressure, not that he needs more: Jamal’s piano – sometimes lush, sometimes pounding – jabs and scurries with glee over the heavy, repetition-based grooves.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9
1. 7:37 – relaxed funky soul: simple riffing theme into spiraling solo
2. 9:55 – standard gets new life: great percussion, infectious riff, piano digs in
3. 5:13 – standard is loose and very playful with some odd-noise interjections
4. 13:13 – tough swagger: modern-jazz classic in a funky strut, piano stretches
5. 13:07 – lyrical tune, dances with light and color through several moods
6. 6:29 – piano/bass duet: standard ballad gets jumbled up and smoothed out
7. 8:19 – solo bass intro; big stormy piano settles into an upbeat swing pulse
8. 7:08 – odd mix of a spare funky beat and huge, ornate piano swooping
9. 4:56 – latin-bebop standard as a slick, propulsive glide
