In 1936, noted ethnomusicologist Lomax spent 5 months in Haiti recording everything from children’s songs to merengues, carnival dances to voodoo music. This is a tiny sampling from his massive 10-disc set recorded by the Library of Congress. Most songs are very short and due to the age of the recording and settings, often are hard to understand. They are often scratchy or have a far away sound. The notes help. Not sure this is the type of music most DJs would play, but it’s a fascinating glimpse into Haitian culture.
Check out especially:
1. Quiet spoken introduction then sweet mid/upbeat tinny piano.
4. Percussion & strings w/a midtempo Caribbean feel.
6. Squeaky merengue w/banjo & vocals. Midtempo.
7. Downtempo and scratchy perc/vocals/strings blend.
9. Wicked voodoo drumming, upbeat and hypnotic.
12. Fast drums, M/F call-response voodoo song gets crazy.
14. Fun fast children’s song w/boy chorus.
16. Another version of #4 w/varying sound levels.
20. Fun, bright, bouncy instrumental merengue.
