Reissue of Burnside’s first album recorded with an electric guitar and band, which was comprised of two of Burnside’s sons and a son-in-law, recorded in 1979-’80, long before he teamed up with Jon Spencer’s Blues Explosion. It’s Mississippi trance, country blues with some strong funk and R&B elements. The real deal for North Mississippi blues. No FCC’s.
*My Favorites*: 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12.
Side A
1. *(2:54) Mid. Funky, driving traditional tune done by everyone and done great here.
2. (3:44) Mid. Country blues w/ some funk and trance.
3. (3:50) Mid. INSTRUMENTAL. R.L.’s guitar imitating a fife - w/ clipped phrases and drums.
4. *(4:37) Slow. Country blues, take-off on Booker T. Jones & William Bell’s’ ‘Born Under A Bad Sign’, originally done by Albert King.
5. *(4:12) Mid. Jimmy Rogers song done funky w/ a bit of trance. Killer.
6. *(3:33) Mid. Upbeat all-out funk, w/ R.L. chatter. Kick-ass!
Side B
7. *(3:10) Mid / Fast. Country blues funk rockin’ drivin’. Yeah....
8. (3:25) Slow. Classic Burnside song. Very sparse w/ guitar.
9. *(2:50) Mid / Fast. Upbeat R&B funk. Infectious - just plain kicks ass.
10. *(4:50) Slow. Dirge, heavy heavy. Great R.L. performance.
11. (6:02) Slow / Mid. Funky bass, R&B, trance.
12. *(3:25) Mid / Fast. Upbeat funk, R&B, driving. Killer bass. Killer band.
