Invisible System – Introducing…

Anglo-Ethiopian trad/dub/jazz/trance, etc. Producer Dan Harper with a cadre of Ethiopian musicians and some guests from groups like Ozric Tentacles and Loop Guru. Bits are like Konono 1, bits are like dub, bits are undefinable… All are pretty damn unusual.
No FCCs – almost nothing in English.
1. 3:37 **skippy, upbeat little romp, bass, flutes and ululations… sounds quite rootsy, for the most part. Grunty bass is most obvious non-trad element. Ends quite a bit early.
2. 4:04 **record scratch for a second, then another skippy little romp similar to the first but with dubby guitar and female call and response vocals. Adds echo to vocals, layers of oddness.
3. 4:05 **alarming bass arpeggios and echoes, distressed sounding vocals, slow – very much horror movie soundtrack vibe.
4. 6:12 ***groovy hand drums, warbling vocals and flutes – fairly trad but full of echoes and strangeness.
5. 4:34 **trance-jazzy, lots of bass, pretty male vocals, bippity boppy snare and hi-hat, orchestral strings. Quite pretty.
6. 6:42 **talking drums, squeaky violins, ululations and exuberance. Female call and response. No bottom end to speak of, very trad sounding.
7. 4:05 ***deeply NOT trad – all weebly electronics, very slow. Male vocals, more in the Arabic vocal tradition than Ethiopian, it seems to me. Exceedingly gnarly. Excellent sax solo.
8. 3:16 ***upbeat trad chants and claps under soupy layers of dub and bass, blending into sort of free-form jazz and female vocals.
9. 5:58 ****utterly squeaky violin, slow drum and bass. Morphs into jolly relaxed midtempo reggae bubble with lovely female vocals.
10. 5:57 ****upbeat funky reggae groove with trad instruments, tinkly things and bits of electronics, male Reggae vocals.. Just “chimes” for last minute and a half.
11. 5:49 **electronic whooshes, gentle female vocals, 80’s post-punk guitar. Gradually builds to a quavery and sweet midtempo Ethiopian alt-rock.
