GET THE BLESSING: OC DC
Naim Jazz, 2012
JAZZ-ROCK – This quartet out of Bristol, England doesn’t show a whole lot of variety, but their sound is so utterly cool and unique it hardly matters. Great tense grooves with saxes and trumpet pushing forward over compelling bass/drum rhythms. Really good instrumental post-rock or laser-focused postmodern jazz, you choose. Just spin it.
All very good! Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8
1. 4:38 – catchy tick-tick groove: dying-duck sax solo & lazy fly-buzzing. Cool.
2. 5:20 – bird ambience, trudging atmospheric mope; wordless quartet vocal
3. 4:57 – cool layered rhythm with sax loop; trumpet & bass wander all over it
4. 5:09 – spy-music vibe: guitar reverb, sneaky horns, cool bassline, good sax
5. 5:00 – relaxed sax over tense bass pulse, burly chorus & brief freedom
6. 6:07 – more of an indie-pop feel, but slides into futuristic space zone
7. 5:14 – great uptempo spin: rock energy bubbles up from below, solos glide
8. 8:02 – almost hypnotic spacey spiral gradually becomes dense & forceful
[ Fo ] - June 2012
