Beethoven: The Late String Quartets (Opp. 127, 130, 131, 132, 133, 135) / Cypress String Quartet
Label: Cypress Performing Arts, 2012
Composed in 1825 and 1826, these are Beethoven’s (1770-1827) last major works. Revolutionary, they also hark back to Haydn and Mozart (in Op. 135) and to Handel. Of Op. 131, Schubert remarked, “after this, what is left for us to write?” One reviewer wrote that the quartets “move, without warning, from prayer-like tranquility to profanity, from sweetly melodious song to jagged debate.” The Grosse Fugue, Op. 133, a staggeringly creative tour de force, was originally the finale of Op. 135; but Beethoven published it separately (also for two pianos as Op. 134) and wrote a new finale. Play any of these quartets to bring listeners the entire range of human emotions, aspirations, hopes, fears and tragedies. Liner note characterizations: Op. 127 – lyric; the slow mvmt is “the most luxuriant of all Beethoven’s essays in variation form.” Op. 130 – mvmts from whimsical to sentimental. Op. 131 – “some say the greatest of the series”. Segments 1 and 7 employ the same theme; Wagner called segment 7, “surely the saddest thing ever said in notes.” Segment 2: shadowy; no. 4: a kaleidoscope; no. 5: a manic whirl; no. 6: a lament. Op. 132 – recounts B’s severe illness and recovery; 2nd mvmt a solemn hymn. Op. 135 – iridescent 1st mvmt, serene 3rd mvmt. 2nd mvmt : brutal, tumult.
