Funky Was the State of Affairs by Fergus and Geronimo
Label: Hardly Art
Released: 8/07/12
This indie/rock group draws inspiration from 60s British Invasion pop, funk, and garage rock. Zappa-inspired, clearly a satirical band poking fun at indie pretentiousness. Lyric content on the subject of aliens, mind control, conspiracy theories, and other interesting stuff. Sonja L. 2/12/13
1. (0:26) Planet Earth is Pregnant for the 5th Time - Short spacey instrumental intro.
2. **(2:43) No Parties - Fast-paced, steady bassline, tame vocals with fake British accent.
3. (0:23) The Strange One Speaketh - satirical skit
4. (1:30) Roman Tick - Nice solid rock track with some punk influence in vocals.
5. (1:00) My Phone’s Been Tapped, Baby - another satirical sci-fi skit
6. (3:18) Roman Nvmerals/Wiretapping Muzak I - Repetitive rock track, with monotonous vocals and short-lived funky sax solo. Last minute of song is a cool jazzy keyboard solo backed up by synths and drums.
7. (2:05) Spies - Upbeat rock track with indie-like vocals. Kinks influenced.
8. (4:21) Earthling Men - Upbeat rock track with Gang of Four-esque lyrical style. Fast-paced with synth-like interludes.
9. (2:31) The Uncanny Valley - Radio/futuristic noises
10. (1:18) Earthling Women - Alien (chipmunk sounding) narration, jazzy drums and bass. Ends with yelp and squawking sax solo.
11. (2:25) Drones - Upbeat rock track, repetitive lyrics, simple melody.
12. **(1:37) Wiretapping Muzak II - Nice jazzy keyboard/synth riff
13. (1:05) Off the Map - Loud rock track with horns/sax, simple melody, R&B influenced.
14. (2:06) The Roman Stuff is Where It’s At - another sci-fi skit
15. (2:23) Marky Move - Upbeat tune that starts off with a solid bass line and clapping. A lot of squawking sax.
16. **(2:59) Funky Was the State of Affairs - Funky track with solid drumbeat, sporadic yelps, upbeat keyboard riffs, squawking sax solos, and “funky was the state of affairs” chanted by children at the end. Surprising standout.
