DR. LONNIE SMITH: The Healer
Pilgrimage, 2012
ORGAN JAZZ – A grand master of the Hammond B-3, Dr. Lonnie Smith doesn’t often wow you with high-speed pyrotechnics. At age 70, he doesn’t have to. Instead, his trio creates low, irresistible, psychedelic grooves that sink into your bones and hypnotize, making you nod your head and grin. But watch out for track 5, it’ll zap you! This is Smith’s first live release since 1970, and it’s stripped down, funky, and great.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6
1. 13:17 – low creepin’: long, moody guitar solo, spare organ freaks out
2. 8:22 – funky uptempo: muddy organ line merges with drums, cool guitar
3. 7:17 – damn, this is cool: restrained soul strut, organ climax & fall back
4. 9:41 – Billy Strayhorn ballad: very slow and sweetly lyrical
5. 10:44 – weird synth intro, then a fast fusion jam with killer guitar/organ solos
6. 11:51 – relaxed, gospelly tune with wordless vocal; sanctified guitar rises up; switches to a fast revival meeting near the end… hot!
