Violinist Pronin, student of Jaime Laredo, is an internationally recognized artist who has performed more than 1,000 solo and chamber music concerts throughout Europe and America. Violinist Nathan Milstein’s variations on the theme from Paganini’s 24th Violin Caprice combine poetry and fire. The Bach Chaconne, the concluding mvmt from Partita No. 2 in D minor BWV 1004, never fails to enchant. Schnittke’s variations juxtapose multiple musical periods and styles in modernist modes and methods, a treat for fans of late 20th cent. music. Ysaÿe’s Sonata is in late Romantic style, but not heart-grabbing. Pronin recorded both parts of the Prokofiev Sonata for Two Violins, wishing to keep the timbres and styles united.
1. Nathan Milstein: Paganiniana (7:36). Entrancing variations on the bewitching Paganini theme also the subject of variations by Rachmaninoff, Brahms and many others.
2. Bach, JS: Partita No. 2 In D Minor, BWV 1004: Chaconne (14:35). Once heard, a never forgotten soul-filling theme and variations.
3. Schnitke, A: A Paganini (13:26). Pensive, dark and disturbing variations on the Paganini theme, using post-modern harmonies.
4. Eugène Ysaÿe: Sonata No. 3 In D Minor, Op. 27 (6:57). Expressive, colorful, ecstatic.
5. Prokofiev: Sonata For Two Violins In C Major, Op. 56: I. Andante Cantabile (3:09). Sad commentary, bordering on bleak.
6. Sonata For Two Violins In C Major, Op. 56: II. Allegro (2:51). Agitated, but with an undercurrent of hope.
7. Sonata For Two Violins In C Major, Op. 56: III. Commodo (Quasi Allegretto) (3:38). Philosophic dialogue re the nature of life.
8. Sonata For Two Violins In C Major, Op. 56: IV. Allegro Con Brio (5:10). Gypsy campfire cavorting, joy, hardship, happy ending.
