The MMQ, a Bay Area group, includes a national Banjo contest winner, a guitar instructor at Mills College, the guitar/banjo/mandolin player for SF’s American Conservatory Theater and an int’l-touring guitarist trained at the SF Conservatory of Music. Aaron Copland’s(1900-1990) Hoe-Down from Rodeo (1942) is based on the American folksong Bonaparte’s Retreat. Anton Dvorák (1841-1904) composed the American String Quartet while on holiday in Ohio, incorporating folk song themes and styles. Leonard Bernstein’s (1918-1990) “Cool” marks the Jets struggle to cork their hostility to the Sharks. American folk song Shenandoah evokes a pioneer moving West. George Gershwin’s (1989-1937) Three Piano Preludes were composed 2 years after Rhapsody in Blue. Bill Monroe was, with Earl Scruggs, the father of Bluegrass. Phillip Glass’s (b. 1937) String Quartet is from the film soundtrack about the Japanese novelist and nationalist Yukio Mishima, who committed seppuku after a failed coup d’état.

4. Dvorák: String Quartet No. 12 - III. Molto Vivace (4:11). Celebration in town.

11. Bill Monroe Medley (8:28). Finger-picking good, sexy waltzin’, manic hi’ steppin’, plain old square dancin’, and fiddlers go wild.
12. Glass: String Quartet No. 3, "Mishima" - I. 1957: Award Montage (4:29). Moonlight Sonata-like figures and melody (but 4/4).
13. Glass: String Quartet No. 3, II. November 25: Ichigaya (1:18). Tense sadness.
14. Glass: String Quartet No. 3, IV. 1962: Body Building (1:45). Quiet reflection by the fishpond in my garden.
