RENT ROMUS’ LORDS OF OUTLAND: Thee Unhip
9 Winds, 2012
FREE JAZZ / EXPERIMENTAL – The latest from this Bay Area improv outfit blends raucous free jams with creepy, electronic-laced sci-fi soundscapes. There’s plenty of gristle in this group to begin with, and the electronics spin them off balance and into utterly bizarre realms.
Experimental fans try any. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 7, 9
1. 3:47 – pulsating intro, then freewheeling trumpet/sax solos over fast rhythm
2. 5:57 – a low, creepy crawl with dark electronic swirls under the sax
3. 5:58 – weird improv with horn vocalizations, robot squeaks, big surge & fall
4. 5:11 – slow, starts like a hall of mirrors, gets into crunchy spinning improv
5. 3:47 – jabbing sax/electronics vs trumpet squeak & whine, peters out
6. 4:36 – a wall of steel wool: harsh electronic haze and chattering squeals
7. 5:34 – dissonant horns in a bubbling maze, gets bouncy/insistent/marching
8. 4:57 – riffing avant-jazz theme falls into free wander over hyper percussion
9. 6:14 – slow sax/bass roam through a world of annoying, buzzing electronics
10. 9:24 – tweaky electronic soundscape; alien sax fanfare; speedy improv
