Seventh full-length release by Alec K. Redfearn and the Eyesores, in addition to another pocketful of Redfearn releases in other bands (AKR and the Seizures, Amoebic Ensemble, etc.). Redfearn is based in Providence, RI and has composed for dance, theater, and film in addition to more conventional musical outings. During listening hours, this was pegged as "gypsy glam" -- on a longer listen, it comes out somewhere at the Venn diagram intersection of Brian Jonestown Massacre, Gogol Bordello, and Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti. Eastern European influences weaving through broader psych-rock and avant-classical themes. Highly engaging compositions that would fit a wide range of shows. No FCCs.
1. * med+, M vox, nice workout for the band, swells and recedes, grounded in krautrock, would be tremendous to see live
2. med+, mixed M/F vox, more folk/balkan
3. * med-, haunted calliope feel with M lead vox and drifty F backing vox
4. * dn, mellow with F choral vox but no lyrics, incidental film music
5. dn+/free, sparse but echoed, mostly vox with few lyrics
6. med(+), sparse but frenetic, accordian leads the way, long fade out
7. dn, similar to #4
8. * up, no vox, accordian led, jarring organ blasts, harsh-toned guitar solo, ends with audience applause
9. med(-), ominous undercurrent in eastern groove, wanders through multiple segments resolving on an organ outro and long low-pitch feedback fade
10. dn/varies, dynamically low cover of classic folk tune; woven so cleanly that it's hard to tell if there really are two songs here
11. med, buzzy, herky-jerky, M vox
12. dn, string-heavy, M lead vox, elegiac way to wind down the trip
