WALTER / HALVORSON / EVANS: Mechanical Malfunction
Thirsty Ear, 2012
AVANT-GARDE – The title sums it up nicely. This is noisy, gritty, very weird music from three kickass improvisers: Weasel Walter (drums), Mary Halvorson (guitar), and Peter Evans (trumpet). They make a great trio, full of unexpected sounds. The recurring theme here is one of those creepy toy monkeys that bang two cymbals together.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 6, 7, 9
1. 4:24 – relaxed and lumpy, very cool percussion; long tones & little scribbles
2. 5:02 – abrupt, uptempo freakout with smashing guitar, brief open scrambles
3. 5:03 – slow pace, falls into quiet, open improv space, one big crunchy bit
4. 4:10 – percolating: something/s wrong with my robot, turns quiet/prodding
5. 4:41 – strange fanfare, steady beat falls apart, 3-way improv w/electronics
6. 6:37 – repetitive: insistent spinning, trumpet blats, rhythm made of silence
7. 3:29 – quick tempo and scrambly trumpet/drums over broken guitar noises
8. 11:18 – long piece incorporating all the bits: big scratchy blasts, several broken-gear patterns, great glitchy guitar, grating solo trumpet
9. 5:08 – slow and a bit creepy: weird guitar patterns, falls apart at end
10. 4:18 – slow-ish and abstract with unsettling rising tension/madness
