“Nonfunctional music for unsocial situations…” courtesy of Washington D.C. “microsound” artist and Richard Chartier. Five extra-long experimental pieces that are true to the album’s name: elegant and detached. Somber and quite lonely, with lots of repetition. I don’t know if I would ever play any of this before midnight, but it’s certainly fascinating stuff. That being said, if you’re a fan of experimental music, you will have no trouble integrating this into your show. FCC CLEAN
1. (11:14) Chopped up sound samples of women speaking in German over what sounds like the amplified sound of air whispering through a room. It’s probably impossible to listen to this while other people are in the room.
2. (15:03) Opens up with metallic thudding and subtle high-pitched buzzing—later melts into several movements of numbing synth washes.
3. (23:20) Minimal ambient music. Every once in a while something will snap, crackle, or pop. The last 10 minutes get a little chipper with some bird chirping and cascading xylophones.
4. (11:54) High-pitched ambient washes with what sounds like a slowed down laundry machine.
5. (9:00) A fragmented beat over a serene ambient backdrop. Every once in a while a vocal sample will say “very close.” Ringing percussion lends the whole thing an alien luminescence. My favorite of the lot.
